Narrow House Extension in Vietnam: ODDO Architects' Innovative Design Inspired by Hanoi's Alleyways (2026)

In the bustling city of Hanoi, Vietnam, a unique architectural project has emerged, challenging conventional design norms. ODDO Architects, a local studio with an innovative vision, has transformed a narrow alleyway into a vibrant living space, showcasing their expertise in adapting to urban constraints.

The Challenge: A Narrow Alleyway

The project, TH+ House, began as an extension to an existing home, TH House, completed by ODDO Architects in 2021. The new site, a mere 2.5 meters wide, was accessible only through narrow pedestrian alleyways, presenting a unique design challenge.

Social Intensity: Drawing Inspiration from Hanoi's Alleys

ODDO Architects saw these constraints not as limitations but as opportunities. Inspired by Hanoi's urban alleyways, where vibrant community life thrives, the studio aimed to replicate this 'social intensity' within the design.

"In Hanoi's alley neighborhoods, daily interactions create a rich social fabric. We wanted to bring this energy into the home," explained the studio.

A Stacked Series of Flexible Spaces

The solution? A stacked series of flexible spaces overlooking tall central voids. The layout is designed as a series of layered environments, with varying degrees of privacy, allowing visual connections across floors.

On the ground floor, a new kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard flow seamlessly into a dining area, with a wall of folding glass doors opening onto the adjacent alley, inviting the outside in.

Above, a living room, tea room, and bedrooms are visually linked through internal windows and a unique bean-shaped opening, creating a sense of continuity and connection.

The Red Steel Column: A Structural Backbone

A key element of the design is the central red steel column. Acting as both a structural backbone and a spatial organizer, it frees the plan from structural constraints, allowing for larger openings and flexible layouts.

"The column expresses our project's idea of openness and adaptability," said the studio. "It's not just a technical solution but a symbol of our design philosophy."

Material Contrast: Warmth and Texture

The lower levels, defined by dark stone floors and exposed concrete ceilings, create a raw, industrial feel. In contrast, the upper levels are lined with timber panels, adding warmth and texture to the space.

A Unique Take on Urban Living

TH+ House is a testament to ODDO Architects' ability to transform constraints into opportunities. By drawing inspiration from Hanoi's alleyways, they've created a home that embraces social interaction and adapts to the city's unique urban fabric.

"This project is a celebration of Hanoi's spirit. It shows that even in the tightest of spaces, we can create vibrant, flexible living environments," concluded the studio.

A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Design

What makes this project particularly fascinating is its potential to influence sustainable urban design. By maximizing the use of narrow spaces and promoting social interaction, ODDO Architects has offered a unique solution to the challenges of urban living.

As cities continue to grow and space becomes a premium, projects like TH+ House offer a glimpse into a future where architecture adapts to, and enhances, the urban environment.
